Metallized BOPP & BOPET

What is metallization?

Metallization is a process by which you can coat an outside layer of every material with a thin layer of a metal, usually Aluminum. A metalize layer can have different colors, but it's usualluy silver or golden.

Is BOPP & BOPET metallizable?

Yes. Both BOPP & BOPET have this capability to be metallized. Sepehr Polymer Sepahan is equiped with the last technology of metallization devices which can metallize all types of BOPET and BOPP.

What is BOPP?

BOPP is the abbreviation of Biaxially Oriented PolyPropylene.

PolyPropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer, in some context polypropene. This material is an ideal surface for printing so that we can make labels, stickers, pouche, etc by using PolyPropylene.

BOPP is essentially polypropylene that’s stretched flat. BOPP is oriented with a system that stretches it in two directions. This is where the “biaxially-oriented (BO)” part of BOPP comes from. The three most common processes for making BOPP are the tenter frame sequential process, simultaneous tenter frame orientation, and the double bubble process. This technical document from Brueckner-Maschinenbau, one of the oldest BOPP manufacturers, explains these processes in more detail.

Common applications for polypropylene and BOPP include:

  • Packaging labels
  • Food containers
  • Plastic ropes
  • Medical-grade plastics
  • Laboratory items
  • Performance textiles

BOPP film’s qualities:

BOPP shares the properties of other PP plastics, including ruggedness, fatigue resistance, moisture resistance, very low toxicity, flexible finishing options, as well a controllable transparency (manufacturers can make BOPP clear, opaque, or any translucency in between). Also, while they make long-lasting labels and stickers and easily printable, most off-the-shelf adhesives have trouble attaching themselves to the material. These qualities are perfect for long-lasting, food-safe labels and other common BOPP film applications.

BOPP film can be white, metal-colored, or clear. The ability to make clear BOPP film allows the creation of transparent labels to show off the contents of clear containers. With the appropriate inks and adhesives, BOPP labels can also be waterproof. BOPP labels immersed in ice-water or subjected to high-humidity without deteriorating. Labels made from BOPP are extremely tough. The material offers exceptional resistance to fatigue compared to other common label materials and has an unusual resistance to common solvents, bases, and acids.

What is BOPET?

BOPET or Biaxially-Oriented Polyethylene Terephthalate is used successfully in a wide range of applications. Its excellent combination of optical, physical, mechanical, thermal characteristics makes it suitable for printing, packaging and lamination and because of its unbeatable barrier level it is approved for food use.

BoPET film was developed in the mid-1950s. Its main uses include:

Packaging: Food packaging general uses, film for flexible pouches, lids, snacks, barrier films, can laminations, and vacuum insulation panels.

Industrial & Specialties: Hot stamping foil, release films, photo resist films, metallic yarns, adhesive tapes, plastic cards, labels, lamination films, brightness enhancement films (computer screens), solar/safety window films, medical test strips, and miscellaneous uses

Electrical: Motor wire and cable, capacitors, transformer insulation films, thermal printing tapes, membrane touch switches (computer and calculator keyboards), and flexible printed circuit films.

Imaging: Microfilm, printing and pre-press films, color proofing, printing plates, drawing office drafting film, overhead transparencies, X-ray films, instant photos, business graphics, and wide format displays.

Characteristics of Polyester/PET/BOPET Film:

1. Optically brilliant, Clear appearance, Outstanding.

2. Excellent dimensional stability, good surface and barrier properties.

3. Good flatness and coefficient of friction (COF).

4. Tear-resistant and puncture-resistant characteristics.

5. Very good resistance to most common solvents, moisture, oil, and grease

6. Excellent barrier against a wide range of gases.
